Breast Augmentation
(Augmentation Mammaplasty)
Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedures by Dr Cheng. Breast augmentation can give women with small or unevenly sized breasts a fuller, firmer, better-proportioned look through the placement of silicone or saline implants in the breast. Silicone gel implants are the most commonly used implants in Australia.
Our patients elect to undergo breast augmentation for many different medical and aesthetic reasons, including balancing breast size, compensating for reduced breast mass after pregnancy or surgery, and correcting a congenital breast defect. Under Dr. Cheng's expert care, patients enjoy great-looking, natural-feeling breasts that are one or more cup sizes larger after the operation.
At Brisbane Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery Centre, your operation will be performed by Dr Cheng, a qualified plastic surgeon with a special interest in both cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery. He performs cosmetic surgery such as breast augmentation, breast reduction and breast lift for patients desiring to enhance their breast appearance. He also provides breast reconstructive surgery for woman undergoing breast cancer treatment.

Complimentary Procedures
Breast augmentation can achieve dramatic and beautiful results on its own as well as in conjunction with other procedures such as a breast lift for more satisfying results.
Implant Types
Breast implants are silicone gel or silicone shells filled with saline (salt water). Both implant types are safe, and each offers its own advantages. Dr Cheng will help you decide which kind is right for you. Silicone gel implants are the most commonly used implants in Australia They are much softer and feel more natural than saline-filled breast implants.
Breast Augmentation Surgery
The breast augmentation procedure lasts one to two hours and is typically performed under a general anesthetic. Dr Cheng operates with a fully qualified anaesthetist who will look after you during your surgery. Incisions are made in inconspicuous places on the breast to minimize scar visibility. These may be located in the crease under the breast (inframammary), or around the areola, the dark skin around the nipple (periareolar). The breast is then lifted, creating a pocket into which the implant is inserted.
During surgery, Dr Cheng will place the implants behind each breast, underneath either breast tissue or the chest wall muscle. Implant placement beneath the muscle of the chest offers a few advantages over placement beneath the breast tissue only. These include reduced risk of capsular contracture (post-operative tightening around the implant) and less interference with mammogram examinations. Dr Cheng will discuss which option may be best for you.
After the implants have been inserted, Dr Cheng will ensure the implant is secured in the best position before the incisions are stitched closed, taped and then bandaged. Surgical draining tubes are not required as there is minimal bleeding with Dr Cheng’s breast implant surgical technique. This also minimizes the hassle for our patients once discharged from the day surgery centre or hospital.
Recovery
Three to four days after surgery, Dr Cheng and his practice nurse will remove your bandages. You will then be fitted with a soft comfortable surgical bra with no underwire. You will be asked to avoid underwire bras for several weeks post operatively. All stitches are dissolvable so there is no need for suture removal.
You may feel a little bit tired and sore after breast augmentation surgery, but this usually passes after 2 or 3 days. Many patients are able to return to work within the week depending on the nature of your work activities.
Scars from breast augmentation incisions will begin to fade in a few months and will continue to fade for 12-18 months. Dr Cheng will provide specific instructions on scar management and breast massage following your surgery.
Dr Cheng will be there for all your post-operative visits to monitor your recovery progress. All your post-operative care is free of charge.
Complications
Complications following breast augmentation surgery are uncommon and usually minimal. They may include capsular contracture, swelling and pain, scarring, infection around the implant, a change in nipple sensation, and breakage or leakage of the implant (implant rupture) as a result of injury or the normal compression and movement of your breast.
